A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.”

Silence.

“Kristen, did you go back to sleep?”

“Say that again?”

It gave her some relief to hear her friend sounding more focussed now. “The rain washed my carpet. What’s so hard to understand?”

There was the ominous silence again before Kristen spoke. “Honey, I think I need coffee for this. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll be over.”

About to disconnect, Molly added, “Don’t forget your togs.”

Cautiously, she padded through the house and checked out the extent of the damage. Fortunately, so far there was damage in the front entrance only as well as her front room and the ensuite bathroom. But then she found more. Farther back in the house, the spare bathroom was flooded as well. Walking past the laundry, she heard the sound she was seeking but hoped not to hear. She stepped into the cold part of the house and saw the small gap in the door through which the water was trickling.

Annoyance rushed through her that she hadn’t seen the leak when she’d come in here to get her boots. Slapping a hand on her forehead, she cursed under her breath as she grabbed all the towels she could find in the linen cupboard. A shiver ran through her body. She was cold despite the already warm summer air seeping through the house. Helpless, she focussed on the situation, trying hard not to give in to the threatening tears. Where was Kristen?

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Dylan placed her bag on the bed and turned to meet her gaze. “I’m sorry this is awkward. I didn’t mean to be nosy but helpful. After all you’re going to be stuck without a vehicle.” He checked the room. “Anyway, your towels are on the bed. The bathroom is over there. Here are the keys. TV is in the main room at the front including a computer. I believe the password is stuck on the screen. My number is…” Dylan pulled out a card. “On here. Call me any time.”

She sucked in her lips as she reached for his card. “I’ll be fine, but thanks.”

Her voice was soft, but still held a lot of hesitation. She rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. It must have been a long day for her.

“No offense, but I don’t believe you will be. I’m sure there’s some food around, but whoever you’re looking for, you will need some sort of vehicle.”

“He’s living around here. According to the map no further than a kilometre or two.”

Their attraction is instant, even more so when they wake up in the same bed after an earthquake. However, it’s her accusation that his interest in her involves her father’s money rather than their mutual magnetism that derails their newfound bond.

Will finding the truth about her parents be a chance for Lani and Dylan to overcome their differences?

Moving her gaze from the soaked carpet towards the door and up to the ceiling, she couldn’t see any obvious signs that the water had come through the roof at this end of the house. She listened carefully, but wasn’t able to hear anything, either, especially not from the bathroom. Taking in a deep breath, she braced herself for the icy water as she was about to put her feet onto the floor. Her spirit plummeted at the thought that the next four months were going to be a nightmare considering the repairs that needed to be made, not to mention dealing with the insurance. And the cost of it all. Trying to tackle one problem at the time, she stood to inspect the damage. Instant pain shot through her as she ran on the tip of her toes, out of the bedroom, along the hall, and to the laundry to find her boots — thanking the winter sale last year, when she’d bought them for next to nothing. With some relief, she saw that only the front part of the house seemed to be affected by the water, but at the same time a rush of resignation shot through her and tears flowed. The splish-splash of her boots as she walked to the kitchen echoed along the hall. With a big sigh, she grabbed the phone and called her friend Kristen.

“Good morning,” her friend answered with a sleepy voice. “What do you want so early in the day?”

A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

“What on earth are you doing in this part of the world without a car?” he asked, both out of curiosity and to keep the slow conversation going. She must’ve been exhausted after not only the bus ride, but also the hike to the house.

“I’m hoping to meet someone.”

“In Lake Tekapo?”

“Sort of.”

He stopped and glanced over his shoulder. “Sort of?”

“He lives up here somewhere.”

“Who?”

“The person I’m hoping to meet.”

Swapping the bag over into his other hand, he kept walking until they reached her room. “May I ask who you’re hoping to meet around here?”

“I’d rather you wouldn’t.”

Today’s Snippet

As soon as Molly Reid woke, she sensed something wasn’t right, and yet, it took her three hits on the snooze button until she was anywhere near in charge of her faculties. Her gaze followed the thin light filtering through the small gap of the curtains. With a bit of effort, she reached over and pulled open the drapes a little more. The sun was just rising above the horizon. How much she disliked Mondays and, even worse, how much she hated the rain last night which had kept her awake for hours. It hadn’t been a gentle pitter-patter of rain but a downpour. Of course, she knew the rain was needed, but it could have been a little softer. She stretched, had another yawn, and swung her legs over the bed … when something cold hit her toes. Instinctively, she pulled her legs closer to her chest, a scream escaping her lips. Wide awake now, Molly leaned forward to check for the cause of the coldness. A shiver ran through her from her toes up to her cheeks. She threw herself back onto the bed, before letting out a loud groan and sat up again, taking in the destruction surrounding her. The day couldn’t get any worse.

“I came by bus.”

That he didn’t expect. “The bus stop is about five to six kilometres down the road.”

“The driver was kind enough to let me hop off at the intersection.”

Dylan chuckled. “That must’ve been Jack.”

She stared at him, evidently not following his thoughts.

He scratched the back of his head. “So, let me do the host thingy. Teddy said, you’ll be the only guest until Monday, so you’ll have the house to yourself until Sunday. I’ll fix you breakfast, and if you like I can offer dinner as well, but that’d be at my place, which is another kilometre down the road.”

She looked around the kitchen, probably not was she expected. Even though Teddy and Mae didn’t charge much for a night, Dylan assumed that a guest would at least expect someone to be around.

“Let me show you to your room.” He turned to walk down the hall and spotted a backpack. “Yours?”

She nodded, and he picked it up.
