I thought I’d go back to my first series “Beginnings“. Some of you might not know it, so hopefully you’ll enjoy it just as much as you enjoyed the “Alinta Bay” Stories
Today’s Hook:
Sophie shrugged. “I wouldn’t have a clue.” Then turned her attention back on Mr. O’Connor and asked the same thing. “Who is she?” The handsome attorney on the other side of the massive desk leaned forward and rested his elbows on it before he started to repeat his earlier speech. Although hearing his words, Sophie still found it all very hard to comprehend. Here she was in this old office, furnished with heavy antique oak furniture, the curtains in a pretty shade of aubergine, and the carpet beneath her shoes thick and warm in a matching shade, hearing about an inheritance from someone she’d never even heard of. Startled by the subtle sound of the clock chiming across the road, Sophie’s gaze turned to the window, where she saw the post office building across the road. It looked impressive and old. It’d been only a few hours since they’d arrived in Hobart, the most southern capital in Australia, but she already liked it. A lot more than Sydney, the place she’d lived all her life. Hauled back from her thoughts, she heard Mr. O’Connor say, “I believe she was a distant relative of yours. I’m afraid I don’t have any further details.”

They left Liz’ house in a group and chatted a little more about the storm front which was on its way as they walked to their cars. Hannah gave a quick wave goodbye as she opened the car and then slid behind the steering wheel. “Oh Hannah,” Kerry said. She flinched as her book friend stood next to her car suddenly. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Kerry looked around before she focussed on Hannah again. “Are you still good for the BBQ on Friday?” She had to dig deep in her memory to find the facts about the invitation when she finally remembered that Kerry had asked her to join her and some friends for a BBQ to celebrate her husband’s birthday. Kerry had been relentless so in the end Hannah had given in. “Of course, seven-thirty at your place. I look forward to it.” “Great. I’ll see you then,” Kerry said and walked to her own car. Hannah settled behind the steering wheel and started the car. “Another person who would like to play cupid?” Hannah jumped in her seat and turned to look at the person in the passenger seat. “How the hell did you get in here?”

“I’m sorry I forced you to try on the necklace. I thought you liked it. All women deserve something that makes them feel pretty.” The stench of oil filled his nose, and he sneezed. He glanced at the noisy passing cars and pulled Calista farther back along the sidewalk, away from a puddle in the road, before a vehicle splashed them. “I understand about lack of trust and the need for secrecy. I hope someday you can tell me what happened, but I do know one thing, even if you never tell me. You were good enough. You always have been and will always be.”
Her blue-green eyes widened. She traced her fingertips over his smooth jaw, leaving sparks in her wake.
“You’re so kind. I almost believe it when you say it. God, I wish I’d met you years ago, Jeremiah.”
“Why do you call me Jeremiah? Everyone else calls me Jim.”
“It feels more personal, as though you belong only to me. I may have to share Jim with the rest of the world, but Jeremiah—the strong, kind man I’ve admired over the past several months—is all mine.”
Her admission branded him like a fire poker to his skin. If he were alone, he’d beat his chest and roar. No woman had ever wanted to claim him. No one but her ever called him Jeremiah.
He coughed, clearing his throat. “Friday is only two days away, but I can’t wait that long. Let’s get in my car and go to a park, somewhere private, to talk.”
“Talk? Is that code for necking like teenagers?”

Placing a hand on Hannah’s arm, Liz suggested, “How about you choose the book for next month’s meeting?” Well, she’d just kicked herself in the butt. How on earth would she be able to choose a book when she’d dislike more or less any of the books they’d read so far. Why on earth was she even here? So she wasn’t stuck alone at home. “Any genre?” she asked. Although wary, the women around her nodded. “Okay, I can do that. I suppose it should be available in the library.” Again, everyone agreed. “And you’d like to have the suggestion by Tuesday?” “Yes, please,” Liz replied. Hannah had no idea, why she was going on with this farce, but she promised her parents to get to know the people in Fermosa Bay, a small coastal town in Victoria, where she only moved recently for her to take over the small medical centre. She promised her family to make friends. And she promised her mother to be nice to men. Well, she did make that promise with her fingers crossed behind her back.

He hopped out of the truck and was around to my side with the door open before I even had my seatbelt unhooked.

I laughed. “That’s a horrible line.”
He raised a brow and lightly dragged his fingers down the side of my face, stopping to cup my cheek, making the hairs on my arms stand on edge. I looked into his crystal-clear eyes and held my breath. His mouth was so close, and I wanted nothing more than to feel his lips on mine. Why wouldn’t he just kiss me already?
“Do you trust me?” His voice was soft, almost hesitant.
“Yes.”
It amazed me how quickly and easily I said that—and how much I meant it. I barely knew him, but deep down in the darkest corners of my soul, I knew he would never hurt me. I didn’t know how I knew that, but I did.
Slowly, Trent closed the distance between us. His lips pressed against mine, featherlight and much too quick. In the split second when our lips connected, I was hit with a wave of intense longing that had my knees shaking. And then in the next moment, he straightened and moved away from me.
Trent cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry.”
