Happy Sunday Today’s snippet starts where we left off last week, Sadie’s reason for travelling to Germany …

ENJOY ♥

Today’s Snippet

Mum! Pain cuts right through my heart and a sudden longing for her rises within me.
Have my words been plain rude? Or did I just freak out because a man, other than David was flirting with me?
David.
My partner of three and bit years. He was the love of my life, or at least so I thought. I was twenty-four when I moved from Tasmania to Sydney. I had applied for a job as an events manager, not believing I’d have a chance. But I got the job. Same day I got the job, I was so excited I missed the bus. It was pouring rain. And that was when I met David, when he offered me half of his umbrella. Yes, he was that kind of man. Well, I assume still is. Just not with me anymore, but with the other woman. Apparently, the one who’s more organised and more mature.
Sad, but true.

Today’s Snippet

About an hour later I sit back in an airplane going through all the same procedures as twelve hours earlier. I store away my on-board luggage in the overhead locker and take out all the things I need right next to me before making myself comfortable in my tiny seat next to the window. Once I’m sitting down, I realise how useless a window seat is because it’s midnight and I cannot see a thing in the distance. However, hopefully there’ll be a nice view of a sunset in a few hours – at least according to my calculations. A big sigh escapes my lips. Not that numbers have ever been my best friends.

I steal a couple of glances around, but there’s no Toby. He excused himself as we walked to the boarding gate. I assumed he had to go to the toilets. One could say, that’s when I lost him, but I suppose Mum would argue I’d lost him when accusing him of picking up girls.

In The Shadows of a Lie – Coming Soon

Today’s Snippet

“Why?” is all I can say, thinking this is all a bit creepy. “Are you always picking up girls at foreign airports.”

The finger leaves my chin and the smile on his face disappears. Even though I feel guilty of saying what I’ve said, but somehow the word sorry doesn’t want to go past my lips. It’s all a bit of an out-of-this-world experience and I haven’t been able to put the pieces together.

With one smooth motion, he stands up and grabs his bag. “I think it’s time to check in for the Frankfurt flight.”

I get the drift. I stepped on his toes. Flirting session is over. I still don’t feel guilty, because after four, okay five hours now, he was a bit too personal with his choice of words.

Mum’s words come back to me: You’re turning into an old and lonely woman if you don’t move on and forget about David.

“You wouldn’t have met me,” he says with a big grin plastered over his face. “True,” I reply.

“And we couldn’t have that, right?”

And then there’s a moment of silence between us, when I look into his eyes I feel as if I’ve known him for years. There is something so familiar and comforting reflecting from within. It gives me butterflies in my stomach, another flip, and I quickly look away. I startle a bit when I feel his finger under my chin to lift it towards him. I look around, desperate to for some distraction.

But I fail.

Miserably.

“I’d love to get to know you better,” he whispers.

I nearly faint. Hasn’t he got a life to pick up some girl, which admittedly, I am slightly odd behaving and not really myself.

“So this isn’t your first flight?”

I think about that question. Not that there’s much to think about it, because it’s obvious, it isn’t. But that was when I was ten years old. That’s over twenty years ago. That’s a long time and considering how much technology and air traffic has changed, I consider this one to be my first flight.

“My first flight as an adult.”

Toby chuckles and I enjoy the happy expression returning to his face.

“I honestly can’t remember much or anything at all. I suppose if I had remembered, I wouldn’t have gone again.”

“You wouldn’t have met me,” he says with a big grin plastered over his face.

“Call me Matt.” He smiles and then lifts his right shoulder in a shrug. “Mum’s spent the last eight weeks in Germany. She’s very ill, so I’m going there to help her with her travels home.” He takes another sip of his coffee and I can’t stop thinking he’s trying hard to avoid eye contact.

“I had a few bad weeks at work so I’m heading over early,” he explains.

Still no eye contact. This is too deep for me and I feel awkward. Four hours is by far not enough to talk emotional stuff already.

He leans back and his handsome smile is back. “Sorry about that.”

I shrug. “It’s okay. Wanna talk about it?” I ask, remembering mum’s words about good manners, but deep down inside I hope he doesn’t.

Matt shakes his head. “Na, not really. After all, I wouldn’t like to ruin your holiday. Tell me about your grandma’s diary.”

There’s a bit of excitement at the thought of the diary. “I found it amongst my mother’s belonging. I never knew my grandma. I have some vague memories of talking to her on the phone, but in those days, it cost half a car to call someone in Germany. She died when I was ten. It was a big funeral back then and a bit overwhelming meeting everyone in Mum’s family.”

I’m back with more snippets. We’ve finally moved to our new house and are now busy exploring the new neighbourhood – it’s just divine and hopefully an inspiration for many, many more books ♥

“So, Sadie. What makes you go to Frankfurt?”

The waitress comes with my ice tea and I take a sip first before I reply nonchalantly, “Grandma’s diary.”

Before I realise what I’ve said, I look up and see his mouth has curled in a smile.

A small sigh escapes me as I appreciate that I can’t leave him hanging there without any further details.

“My Mum died a few weeks ago.”

I pause as I watch the expression on his face change, but also to let the brief moment of grief wash over me.

“Anyway, I found grandma’s old diary and while I was talking to my uncle after the funeral, he invited me over. Mainly to catch up with family, but also to find out about my grandparents. About mum’s childhood and such.”

I’m getting carried as usual when I talk about my mum away, so I stop.

“Sorry about your mum,” he replies quietly.

I nod and thank him, unable to say anything else. Tears are welling up and as Mathias has already seen the worst part of me, I don’t really want him to experience a sobbing me as well.

Letting out a long breath, I straighten up and ask, “What about you, Mathias? Why Frankfurt?”

I’ve returned to an old manuscript which I started years and years ago.
The story is about Sadie who’s found her mother’s diary, which will eventually take her on a journey to Germany.
… she’s just landed in Singapore …

And again, I notice how he takes my hand and like an old couple we wander past tired and excited faces. Past countless of little shops and eateries. Until we finally settle on a little café.

The ice tea is soothing as it makes its way down my throat. I’m enjoying the cold drink more than I would’ve thought. All I did during the last flight was drink water, but this… this is… this has taste to it. I order another one.

“Didn’t you get anything to drink during the flight?”

Nodding, I reply. “I did, but I can’t stand plain water.”

Mathias takes a sip of his coffee and then looks at me. It’s the look I’ve got used to over the last, wow, I’ve known him for about four hours now. Quickest date ever. Anyway, he looks at me and I’m glad I’m sitting down, because otherwise, my legs would probably buckle underneath me.

“So Sadie. What makes you go to Frankfurt?”

The waitress comes with my ice tea and I take a sip first before I nonchalantly reply, “Grandma’s diary.”

“Which flight are you on?”

“Oh!”

In one smooth move I have my backpack in front of me and dig into the front pocket. We glance over the flight details and find out we’re on the same plane to Frankfurt. When I look up to Mathias, he’s already looking around towards a big flight schedule board.

“Terminal 3, Gate B6,” he comments.

I follow his gaze and it takes me at least another minute or two to confirm what he’s just said.

“Don’t you trust me?” he asks me with a chuckle.

Heat rises up into my cheeks. “I do, but I am woman,” I reply.

His chuckle turns into one of those really nice laughter and I smile as well.

“C’mon cupcake. Let’s get this drink for you.”

Thank goodness, I’m in charge of my faculties again. At least some of them. “Mathias, I need to check my connection flight.”

He stops so suddenly that I bump into him. Honestly, I have no idea how he can still smell so yummy after the flight. I’m hoping that my little bit of vanilla body lotion and the perfume are still working.

Momentarily distracted by checking his bag, Mathias doesn’t notice that I look around to orientate myself. A brief rush of panic rises as I’m aware that I’m following a stranger in a strange country. Thousands of What ifs are racing through my mind, when he holds a piece of paper in front of me. First thing I read is Mathias Ciaran Cavendish. Confused about the name, I don’t hear what he’s telling me. The pronunciation of Mathias sounded so German, or at least not English, but Ciaran and Cavendish couldn’t be any more Irish. In my opinion anyway. I tilt my head to look at him. His face is very close to mine. He’s actually staring at me with a raised brow.
