Disappointed, I merely nod. I wish this plane had a little bar or a social corner. We dodge a few more toilet-bound passengers, when he holds up his hand. “Wait here.”

Really? Does he expect me to take orders already? But I wait. Curiosity killed the cat, I suppose. It’s not that I have something better to do. I watch his body disappear into the semi darkness of the plane. With a sigh, I dodge a few more passengers, before I see Toby return.

“My number in Germany. I have nothing planned the first few days.”

I stare at him, not really sure, what to say or to do.

“I’d love to invite you for a drink he says, but–“

I laugh. “Bad excuse.” Our good rapport is back on track.

“Where’s your seat?”

“Right at the front, next to the exit.”

“And you’re using the toilets at this end of the plane?”

“I was in need of a nice long walk.”

He chuckles, and I notice the tingles down my spine. The thought, that I have no idea where he’s seated comes to mind. “What about you?”

“Nah,” he says. “I’ve had a big walk through the airport.”

“With a gentle slap on his arm, I tell him, “Your seat.”

A smile spreads across his face, and he points to a few rows further down the aisle. Disappointed, I merely nod. I wish this plane had a little bar or a social corner.

Leaning closer to the seats to let the man go past me, I notice the chance to use the ladies’ room.

“Sorry, but I’ve gotta go,” I say to Toby and then enter the small little cubicle to do my thing.

My visit to the restroom takes a little bit longer as usual, simply because I’m bumping my arms against the wall with every movement. Definitely designed by a man, I curse.

As I wash my hands, I check my image in the mirror and I nearly faint. Not that I’d consider myself vain, but after all, there’s a guy outside, who wants to get to know me better. If he still does, I remind myself. I chuckle and the thought that time will most likely go faster if I have someone to talk to. Toby is nice, and he did apologise, or at least he understood where I was coming from.

I drag my fingers through my hair, to give it a bit of a decent look, lick my lips and take a deep breath before I squeeze my body through the little door.

And my luck, he’s still standing there with a big grin on his face. I’m hoping it’s because of my awkward exit from the toilets and not the way I look.

I lean back to check the ‘occupancy lights’ and bump into a hard chest.

“I’m reall–” Sorry, I wanted to say, but the words stuck in my throat. Out of all the passengers, it’s Toby’s sinewy chest I have connected with.

He stares at me, one brow slightly raised.

“Sorry,” I croak. Though, I’m not completely sure whether it refers to my inappropriate accusation in the airport or bumping into him.

In the semi-darkness, I can only make out a little nod.

Looking up for the toilet sign I’m giving myself a two-second prep talk and look at him again. “And I’m terribly sorry for what I said earlier. There are no excuses for it and I’m–”

He puts his fingers on my lips to silence me and at that moment I’m glad I’ve got one hand on one of the seats to hold me up.

“As much as I was annoyed by it, after thinking about it, it made sense. After all, you’ve only known me for a few hours.”

I didn’t expect that one coming. But I’m really pleased and relieved.

“Excuse me.” A deep voice behind startles me.

Leaning closer to the seats to let the man go past me, I notice the chance to use the ladies’ room.

More so, because I really miss him. I did love him and without admitting it to myself, I still do.
I let out a big sigh. The couple next to me are awake, so I take the opportunity to get up and stretch my legs. As I wander along the aisle and to the toilets, I keep my gaze firmly on the ground. After spending the last hour reminiscing my time with David only to curse him for leaving me because I’m apparently not mature enough (highly overrated anyway, if you ask me), I don’t really feel like finding Toby and dump some guilt on top of my emotions. I look up for the toilet signs and curse some more as they’re all occupied. I do some quick maths in my head – I’m leaning against a seat in row thirty-eight, three seats each side, four in the middle… it’s not working. My head’s aching from the lack of sunshine, fresh air, and some decent food. Point is, though, eight toilets (or are there some hidden ones?) are just not enough.

Mum! Pain cuts right through my heart and a sudden longing for her rises within me.
Have my words been plain rude? Or did I just freak out because a man, other than David was flirting with me?
David.
My partner of three and bit years. He was the love of my life, or at least so I thought. I was twenty-four when I moved from Tasmania to Sydney. I had applied for a job as an events manager, not believing I’d have a chance. But I got the job. Same day I got the job, I was so excited I missed the bus. It was pouring rain. And that was when I met David, when he offered me half of his umbrella. Yes, he was that kind of man. Well, I assume still is. Just not with me anymore, but with the other woman. Apparently, the one who’s more organised and more mature.
Sad, but true.

Today’s Snippet

About an hour later I sit back in an airplane going through all the same procedures as twelve hours earlier. I store away my on-board luggage in the overhead locker and take out all the things I need right next to me before making myself comfortable in my tiny seat next to the window. Once I’m sitting down, I realise how useless a window seat is because it’s midnight and I cannot see a thing in the distance. However, hopefully there’ll be a nice view of a sunset in a few hours – at least according to my calculations. A big sigh escapes my lips. Not that numbers have ever been my best friends.

I steal a couple of glances around, but there’s no Toby. He excused himself as we walked to the boarding gate. I assumed he had to go to the toilets. One could say, that’s when I lost him, but I suppose Mum would argue I’d lost him when accusing him of picking up girls.

“Why?” is all I can say, thinking this is all a bit creepy. “Are you always picking up girls at foreign airports.”

The finger leaves my chin and the smile on his face disappears. Even though I feel guilty of saying what I’ve said, but somehow the word sorry doesn’t want to go past my lips. It’s all a bit of an out-of-this-world experience and I haven’t been able to put the pieces together.

With one smooth motion, he stands up and grabs his bag. “I think it’s time to check in for the Frankfurt flight.”

I get the drift. I stepped on his toes. Flirting session is over. I still don’t feel guilty, because after four, okay five hours now, he was a bit too personal with his choice of words.

Mum’s words come back to me: You’re turning into an old and lonely woman if you don’t move on and forget about David.

“You wouldn’t have met me,” he says with a big grin plastered over his face. “True,” I reply.

“And we couldn’t have that, right?”

And then there’s a moment of silence between us, when I look into his eyes I feel as if I’ve known him for years. There is something so familiar and comforting reflecting from within. It gives me butterflies in my stomach, another flip, and I quickly look away. I startle a bit when I feel his finger under my chin to lift it towards him. I look around, desperate to for some distraction.

But I fail.

Miserably.

“I’d love to get to know you better,” he whispers.

I nearly faint. Hasn’t he got a life to pick up some girl, which admittedly, I am slightly odd behaving and not really myself.

“So this isn’t your first flight?”

I think about that question. Not that there’s much to think about it, because it’s obvious, it isn’t. But that was when I was ten years old. That’s over twenty years ago. That’s a long time and considering how much technology and air traffic has changed, I consider this one to be my first flight.

“My first flight as an adult.”

Toby chuckles and I enjoy the happy expression returning to his face.

“I honestly can’t remember much or anything at all. I suppose if I had remembered, I wouldn’t have gone again.”

“You wouldn’t have met me,” he says with a big grin plastered over his face.
