Slowly, she lifted her head to meet his gaze.

“I’m sure there’s no reason to worry. We’ll be moving along soon again,” he added in an attempt to comfort her.

A small smile gradually spread across her face. “Nice meeting you, Jonah, though I wish it were under different circumstances,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She took a deep breath and added with more spark, “I’m Maddie, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Her deep blue eyes held him captive, and he found himself lost in them until her voice brought him back from his thoughts.

“Did you hear me?”

He shook his head slightly. “Apologies.”

“I said, I hope the local police didn’t upset a retiree by just giving him the traditional gold watch.”

It took a moment for him to comprehend her attempt to humour the situation. A soft chuckle escaped him, as he stood. “There has to be an emergency button.”

An abrupt jolt threw him off balance, disrupting his train of thought and momentarily disorienting him. He instinctively reached out, pressing his hands against the walls to steady himself. The sudden darkness followed by flickering dim lights left him briefly dazed. He took a few deep breaths to regain his composure and calm his racing heart.

In the dim light, he noticed the woman crouching on the floor, arms wrapped around her legs.

“Are you okay?”

As the words left his lips, he cursed himself for asking such a stupid question. Clearly, she wasn’t. Judging by her trembling hands and uneven breathing, she was far from okay.

Gently, he placed his hand over hers and as calmly as possible, he introduced himself. “Hey, there. I’m Jonah.”

Jonah Lewis rushed down the corridor, reaching the lift just in the nick of time before its doors closed behind him. He swiftly pressed the button for the ground floor and stood in a corner. A young woman across from him glanced briefly in his direction before averting her gaze to the closed doors.

“Sorry about that,” he offered as an attempt to break the ice, but he received only a nearly imperceptible nod in response.

His gaze shifted to the floor, studying the peculiar pattern of the carpet, attempting to ignore the awkward silence. He flinched when her sudden sneeze echoed through the little cabin like a clap of thunder.

“Bless you.”

Again, she briefly met his eyes and mumbled a quiet “Thank you.”

Obviously, nothing had changed over the past fifteen years since he had left Alinta Bay. This place held countless memories of where he’d spent most of his childhood until his parents packed up and left to start anew in New Zealand.

Though the connection was iffy, with static breaking their words Jonah got the gist of the message.

“I’ve dispatched a team. They should reach you in about fifteen minutes. Will you both be okay?”

“Could you please send Jack?” Maddie asked as she rose back to her feet again. “I’m sure he can get us out of here.”

After a brief pause, the voice responded, “No Jack here, Maddie. Are you certain he’s part of our team?”

Jonah couldn’t contain his laughter at her movie reference again, and Maddie shook her head with some amusement as well.

“Never mind.” Her words carrying a hint of resignation, yet a soft smile lingered on her lips.

“Alright, team, I’m signing off. But I’ll keep you updated as soon as I have any information. Stay calm, don’t panic, and we’ll have you out of there soon.”

“Okay,” he said. “One, two, three.”

Maddie turned to Jonah, her eyebrows raised. He hitched a shoulder in question as well but stepped closer to the control panel.
“I’m here.”
“Thanks. Could you try to manually open the doors?”
Jonah thought of it as an odd request, but before he could respond, Maddie piped up, “You do know this is a bit sexist, right? You could have asked me that question too.”
Of all the people, he had to be stuck with someone who walked the path of political correctness. However, Jonah chose to remain silent, not wanting to engage in this particular conversation. Instead, he gestured towards the doors. “Be my guest.”
Some static noise followed from the panel. “Maddie, this isn’t about sexism. I needed to talk to Jonah as well. It’s not only about finding out what can be done but also understanding your mental state.”
She blew out a frustrated sigh and slouched her shoulders. “I know you’re right, and I do apologise. I just feel so helpless.”
Jonah winked at her. “Let’s tackle this together.”

“It’s basically dark, except for a dim light.”

“Thanks,” the electronic voice said. “May I ask if Jonah is an adult?”

Facing him, she studied him with deliberate slowness, creating an oddly awkward atmosphere between them. “Not sure why he wouldn’t be, but, yes, he’s a fine specimen of an adult.”

Jonah cocked a brow and crossed his arms, a hint of amusement tugging at his lips despite the situation.

“The two of you and no one else?”

Jonah was certain the security person had to hold back on his mirth as well.

Maddie’s forehead creased into a frown, and she shot him a glare that wiped the amusement in an instant. Focussing on the panel, she responded, “Yes, just the two of us. Isn’t that enough?”

She pursed her lips, inhaling deeply before replying, “This lift should have already started moving downward by now if it was a minor issue.”

An eerie feeling crept over him. A worry that she was putting on a front and slowly spiralling into panic.
