Where was Kristen?
With her hands gripping her head, she looked around to figure out what to do next. More instinctively than anything else, she grabbed some towels and opened windows and doors to let in the heat. Then she went outside, walked around the house to check the damage from outside the laundry door. Fortunately, the problem was easy to fix.
“Friggin’ stupid gutter,” she cursed. A sudden chuckle bubbled out as she remembered her husband had always told her about the importance to keep them clear. Shoulders slouched and head hanging low, she took a moment to recover from her grief. She missed him so much.
Exhaling a long breath, she picked herself up and rushed to the shed to get the ladder. With some difficulty, she placed it against the house wall and quickly rectified the problem, or at least as much as possible. Ten minutes later, the gutter was clean, although twelve hours too late. She looked down at herself after returning the ladder, sticky from sweat and drenched from head to toe. Yet, the sound of a car driving into her driveway put a little smile on her lips.
“Good morning,” Kristen greeted as she climbed out of her vehicle.
Molly had to hold back the urge to run into her friend’s arms to finally give into the tears. When Kristen held up a cup of coffee from the bakery in one hand and a croissant in the other, Molly gave in and choked back a sob.
“This is worse than I expected. I don’t think there’s much you can do except call the insurance company.”
Molly angled her head to the side, staring at her friend, mouth open.
“You haven’t called the insurance company yet, have you?”

A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.”
Silence.
“Kristen, did you go back to sleep?”
“Say that again?”
It gave her some relief to hear her friend sounding more focussed now. “The rain washed my carpet. What’s so hard to understand?”
There was the ominous silence again before Kristen spoke. “Honey, I think I need coffee for this. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll be over.”
About to disconnect, Molly added, “Don’t forget your togs.”
Cautiously, she padded through the house and checked out the extent of the damage. Fortunately, so far there was damage in the front entrance only as well as her front room and the ensuite bathroom. But then she found more. Farther back in the house, the spare bathroom was flooded as well. Walking past the laundry, she heard the sound she was seeking but hoped not to hear. She stepped into the cold part of the house and saw the small gap in the door through which the water was trickling.
Annoyance rushed through her that she hadn’t seen the leak when she’d come in here to get her boots. Slapping a hand on her forehead, she cursed under her breath as she grabbed all the towels she could find in the linen cupboard. A shiver ran through her body. She was cold despite the already warm summer air seeping through the house. Helpless, she focussed on the situation, trying hard not to give in to the threatening tears. Where was Kristen?

Moving her gaze from the soaked carpet towards the door and up to the ceiling, she couldn’t see any obvious signs that the water had come through the roof at this end of the house. She listened carefully, but wasn’t able to hear anything, either, especially not from the bathroom. Taking in a deep breath, she braced herself for the icy water as she was about to put her feet onto the floor. Her spirit plummeted at the thought that the next four months were going to be a nightmare considering the repairs that needed to be made, not to mention dealing with the insurance. And the cost of it all. Trying to tackle one problem at the time, she stood to inspect the damage. Instant pain shot through her as she ran on the tip of her toes, out of the bedroom, along the hall, and to the laundry to find her boots — thanking the winter sale last year, when she’d bought them for next to nothing. With some relief, she saw that only the front part of the house seemed to be affected by the water, but at the same time a rush of resignation shot through her and tears flowed. The splish-splash of her boots as she walked to the kitchen echoed along the hall. With a big sigh, she grabbed the phone and called her friend Kristen.
“Good morning,” her friend answered with a sleepy voice. “What do you want so early in the day?”
A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.

As soon as Molly Reid woke, she sensed something wasn’t right, and yet, it took her three hits on the snooze button until she was anywhere near in charge of her faculties. Her gaze followed the thin light filtering through the small gap of the curtains. With a bit of effort, she reached over and pulled open the drapes a little more. The sun was just rising above the horizon. How much she disliked Mondays and, even worse, how much she hated the rain last night which had kept her awake for hours. It hadn’t been a gentle pitter-patter of rain but a downpour. Of course, she knew the rain was needed, but it could have been a little softer. She stretched, had another yawn, and swung her legs over the bed … when something cold hit her toes. Instinctively, she pulled her legs closer to her chest, a scream escaping her lips. Wide awake now, Molly leaned forward to check for the cause of the coldness. A shiver ran through her from her toes up to her cheeks. She threw herself back onto the bed, before letting out a loud groan and sat up again, taking in the destruction surrounding her. The day couldn’t get any worse.

As she <Molly> reached for her underwear, the door opened. Jerking to a straight upright stance, ignoring the hammering in her chest, she stared for a second. A scream was stuck in her throat, almost choking her, she tried to let it out but in vain. Instinctively, she grabbed the soap and threw it at the person standing in the door.
The man didn’t budge.
She looked around, grabbed for her face washer, and threw that at him as well, even as she admitted to herself about the uselessness of the piece of cloth.
He caught it and a frown crossed his face. “Will you stop it?”
Finally able to, she shouted at the top of her voice. “Out! Get out!”
But he only cocked a lazy brow at her.
Holding on to the towel with one hand, she searched for something else to throw at him. “Who are you? What are you doing here?”
He raised his other brow as well. “Me?”
Although the steady drumming of her heartbeat still pulsed in her ears, the initial scare inside her abated. Despite a startling tingle tiptoeing down her spine and worry washing over her, her feet remained rooted to the floor, because there was something about him that didn’t scream danger to her. “Can you see anybody else here?” There could be no mistaking the hard note of annoyance in her voice.
His gaze flicked down to her chest where it paused for a moment before their eyes met again. Or was he checking out her scar? Awareness came over her, and she wished she had something to cover it up with.
And finally, he told her the reason of his intrusion. “I own the house.”
It took her a beat to relay the information to her brain. “Excuse me?”
“I own the house,” he repeated.
Finding her moisturiser bottle, she held on to it as tightly as possible for the sake of holding onto something. She hoped there was going to be an end to this soon. She squared her shoulders and narrowed her eyes. “Not sure what you’re on about, but this house belongs to the late Mrs. Fielding.”
His lips quirked on one side. “I know. She was my grandmother.”

Today’s Hook:
“Isn’t she in France?” “Not anymore, it seems.” “Shit.” Graham choked back a snort. “Not the word I’d use, but I agree.” Noah ignored the subtle chide. “Is that something you’ll work on?” “Yes.” Noah hesitated, not sure what else to say. “Okay. I’ll see you soon.” He hung up and snatched a piece of paper from his desk to jot down all the things he had to do in the next twenty-four hours. Not much time.

“Fu… Sorry, buddy. You know it’ll take you close to a week to get there this time of the year.” He chuckled. Yes, he was aware of it. “It’s not that bad. I will need you to fly me to Anchorage and I’ll hitch a flight from there.” “Shit. Let me check the weather forecast, and I’ll get back to you.” “Thank you, mate. I owe you.” “Hey, and I’m sorry about your grandma.” “Thanks, Dean. It’s important for me to be at the funeral. She was the one who took care of me after Mum left.” A heavy silence hung between them for a long beat until his friend picked up the conversation again. “No problems, buddy. We’ll make it work.” “Thanks. I really appreciate it.” He hung up, checked the weather as well, and hoped he was going to be on his way home the next day. A thought popped into his mind, and he reached for his phone again. Graham answered almost straight away. “Sorry Graham, I’m not really sure about the time difference, but I have a quick question.” “Shoot.” The short answer made Noah believe it must have been some ungodly hour in Australia. “Does my mother know?” Graham blew out a breath. “No. I’m sorry, but I haven’t tracked her down, yet.” That surprised him. After all, the lawyer had been able to track him down in Alaska. “Isn’t she in France?”

Switching on the light, he stood and headed into the living area where he threw wood on the fire. He might as well stay awake. After he’d dressed, he made himself a cup of tea and then booted up his laptop. He loaded pictures of Alinta Bay and his lips quirked into a smile as he reminisced about his childhood days. Slowly images of picnics with his grandmother and afternoons at the beach on his surfboard with friends returned, bringing a smile to his lips. He checked the time. It was half past seven, and he reached for his phone. A few seconds later, his best friend answered the call. “Buddy, what’s up?” “Morning, Dean. I’ll need to head back to Australia for a week or two.” Noah had an idea of his friend’s thoughts and added, “My grandma died.”

Yet, why did the simple four-letter word have such an impact on him? “I’ll come home.” He paused, hardly able to believe his own words. Was this simply an emotional reaction or something he intended to do indeed? “Give me a couple of days. It’s shit weather over here, with a snow front on its way.” Graham chuckled. “You’d better get used to the idea of returning with your summer clothes. We’re currently dealing with a heat wave here.” Rubbing his face with his hand, Noah smiled. He remembered those hot days during which he’d surfed the ocean. “I’m sure I’ll find some shorts and a T-shirt.” He disconnected after promising Graham to stay in contact and send him the details of his arrival. It was going to be hell to get out of this place this time of the year. He closed his eyes and tried to remember Alinta Bay. The small coastal town he had grown up in. Tried to remember the house he lived in with his grandmother, but as much as he wracked his memory to come up with something, it eluded him. Except for the bright green carpet along the hall and in his room. He choked back a chuckle. Out of all things, that was stuck to his brain. Of course, he also recalled the old, beaten up car. How could he forget? It’d always been touch and go to get the engine started.
