Hi everyone – I’m sharing another snippet of my latest book “In the Shadows of a Lie” was released last month. The story is mainly set in New Zealand and available for free on Kindle Unlimited. Enjoy ♥♥

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Lani stood and enjoyed the display in front of her for a while before she returned to her own room. She unpacked a sandwich and ate it as she read through the information folder. It had the touristy details in it like main phone numbers for police, hospital, and emergency. It also listed some local activities and recommended a few restaurants. It contained housekeeping items such as the location of the main exits in case of a fire and the time for breakfast, which, in her case at the moment, was irrelevant. It detailed instructions on how to light a fire, for which she was grateful, and the connection for the Wi-Fi.

She placed the folder back on the bedside table and reached for her phone to connect. Her relief was instant as soon as the little indicator told her she had been successful. Quickly, she checked her emails and then the local time in Melbourne. They were only two hours behind. She opened another app and called her grandmother.

BLURB

The discovery of her mother’s diaries unravels a secret which sends Lani on a journey to New Zealand …

She lost her mother in an accident. Now, Lani Dekker is determined to meet the man who, according to her mother’s diaries, is her father. He’s not what she expected, a bit on the extravagant side, but she soon warms up to him, thanks no less to Dylan, her father’s neighbour. Despite her attraction to Dylan, she can’t figure out whether he’s a friend or foe.

Dylan Harper is merely going through the daily motions after his wife died in a ski crash. That is, until his life is turned upside down by the arrival of his neighbour’s daughter. Their attraction is instant, even more so when they wake up in the same bed after an earthquake. However, it’s her accusation that his interest in her involves her father’s money rather than their mutual magnetism that derails their newfound bond.

Will finding the truth about her parents be a chance for Lani and Dylan to overcome their differences?

Markus and Sarah’s lives couldn’t be more different…

After three years away as a goalkeeper for an English soccer club, Markus DeLeon is happy to be back in Melbourne, back with his family and friends, including Sarah. He has known her since childhood, and has often provided her with a safe place from the teasing of other children and the troubles of a broken home. Yet, events after attending their friends’ wedding set off a shift in their relationship and questions, which neither Markus nor Sarah know how to approach.

Sarah Winter caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and not for the first time Markus offers her a much-needed shoulder to cry on. This time, however, an attraction between them intensifies, ending in a passionate afternoon, and Markus doesn’t know how to handle this new side of their friendship and flees to the coast. Sarah, unsure as well about the recent events, is surprised by his sudden departure, but is soon sidetracked by misunderstandings and a family emergency.

But sometimes risking what you have means you might lose everything…

A one-night stand, a surprise baby, and a mysterious stalker.

Mechanic Benjamin Starwell can’t stop thinking about Belle Hamlin, the ballsy musician he slept with and skipped out on months earlier. He never meant to get her pregnant, but he’ll do whatever it takes to win back her trust and be a part of his child’s life. His desire for Belle drives him to be a better man, but he’s worn thin with a garage to run and his estranged sister dumping her troubles on him.

Belle’s juggling impending motherhood, her indie rock career, and a stalker who’s determined to see her fail. Even though she’s desperate to get her priorities straight, she pushes aside her past hurt and welcomes Benji back into her bed. She never expects him to slip into her heart.

When the danger escalates, they face the greatest challenge of all—protecting their unborn child.

PG Excerpt

As he drew to a stop beside Lando’s station wagon in the driveway, Belle parked along the curb. The motion detector light flashed on from the old shed, nearly blinding him. He climbed from the truck. Moonlight cast a stark, silvery glow over the yard as Belle hurried toward him.

“Cool. A duplex.” She tightened her scarf around her neck. “When was it built?”

“The 1940s. I live in the right-side unit, and my landlord lives in the other one.” He rubbed his hands together as a breeze rustled through the trees. “Lando’s children moved out east, so he converted the family home into a duplex about two decades ago. The old-timer is spry but pushing eighty. I take care of the house and grounds. In return, he deducts my rent.”

Lando the landlord?”

“Hilarious, right?” Benji chuckled. “I’ve lived here for about fifteen years. God, I can’t believe it’s been so long.” Crickets chirped from the bushes lining the covered wooden porch as he guided her up the platform. The middle step creaked under his weight. Decorative fixtures lit each doorway, and he hesitated at the entrance of his home.

“Everything all right?”

“I should’ve told you this before now, but my sister has been staying with me. She’s barely crossed my mind, though. All I’ve cared about is making things right with you.”

Belle drew back. “I didn’t think you had any contact with her.”

“She called me from out of the blue. It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it at dinner.”

“Is Meghan why you have those marks?”

“Unfortunately.” He rubbed his cheek, the bruise barely stinging.

After he ushered Belle inside, he flipped on a light and locked the door behind him. A staircase lined the dividing wall that separated Benji’s home from Lando’s. The hall stretched to the right of the stairs, leading deeper into the house.

“Feel free to look around. The door beneath the stairs opens into the basement and laundry room. The steps are steep, so be careful.”

“You expect me to snoop? What will I find in the basement—chains and whips?”

He groaned from the devilish gleam in her eyes. “If I’m gonna chain you, it’ll be to my bed.” He shifted sideways, trying to hide the sudden bulge in his jeans. “You’re welcome here anytime.”

“Thank you. That means a lot.”

Throwing himself back into the pillow, he tried to sort all the thoughts rushing through his head and deal with the guilt that spread through him.

“You’ve inherited her house and her savings,” he heard Graham saying. “I can call you again in a few days if you’d like me to get everything organised from this end. Unless you’d like to come home.”

Home.

Alinta Bay hadn’t been his home for so many years and the simple word sounded so wrong. Alaska was his home and had been for over six years now. And he was happy.

Yet, why did the simple four-letter word have such an impact on him?

“I’ll come home.” He paused, hardly able to believe his own words. Was this simply an emotional reaction or something he intended to do indeed? “Give me a couple of days. It’s shit weather over here, with a snow front on its way.”

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

For the next ten minutes, she wandered through the house and checked the doors and windows. The house was beautiful. The owner had decorated it in a tasteful mountain log cabin style. It had been built and primarily furnished of wood. And she loved it. Most of the spacious rooms incorporated a window bench to enjoy the view and a cosy little bathroom. The fireplace was the centrepiece of the living room … and suddenly she thought of the possibility of a cold night ahead, but with some relief, she remembered seeing a panel heater in her room. She needed to check it before going to bed.

After her tour of the house, Lani returned to the kitchen for her belated cup of tea and then meandered upstairs where she found another two rooms. Loft rooms. She strode over to the window and with a full moon shining bright, she was treated to a memorable view of the mountains in the distance. The snow glittered like diamonds under the starry night, dancing on the snow. It was hypnotising.

Today, I’d like to dedicate the snippet to a former “snippeter” and fabulous author who sadly passed away too early. Ed Hoornaert’s blog posts were not only his weekly snippets, but full of mischief through the eyes of his cat “Effing Feline”. He was a great writer who was fun, but most of all, very supportive. I will miss him.

My snippet today will again be from my book “Tell it to My Heart” (free for KU Subscribers), book 3 in the Alinta Bay series. I will start a new WIP very soon. Today’s snippet moves into Noah’s POV …

Today’s Snippet

Noah Fielding woke to the sound of his phone buzzing relentlessly on the bedside table. Reluctantly removing one arm from under the covers, he reached for his watch, squinting to read the time. Three o’clock in the morning. Who in the hell would call at this crappy time of the day? Or night as it were.

A rumble of thunder almost drowned out the buzzing, but it didn’t go away. With a big sigh, he grabbed the phone and answered. “Hello?”

“Is this Noah Fielding?”

“Who wants to know?”

“My name is Graham Hendrix, and I represent the estate of the late Mrs. Eliza Fielding from Alinta Bay. My apologies, I tried to get the time difference right, but it seems I didn’t.”

He swung his legs to the side of the bed and sat up. “Late?”

“My apologies, Mr. Fielding, your grandmother passed away two days ago. She had pneumonia from which she didn’t recover.”

He held onto the phone like his life depended on it and for several long seconds stared into the darkness. A pain settled in his chest and instinctively he rubbed it with the palm of his hand. “Shit.”

He almost missed Graham’s words, which were spoken in a hushed voice. “My condolences.”

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Lani watched Dylan leave, still in two minds about him. He’d triggered all kinds of thoughts within her. She visualised his good boy looks with his short blond hair, stunning blue eyes, and yes, she had to admit, a very sexy, impish smile. The blue shirt fit snugly, even untucked over his faded cargo pants. True, she definitely had been the reason for their awkward conversation, and as she rubbed the fatigue out of her eyes, she justified her actions by the fact that she hadn’t expected to come to an empty bed and breakfast without a host. The idea of being on her own in a decent sized house somewhere in New Zealand didn’t fill her with great confidence either, not to mention how much it unnerved. Who could blame her for being somewhat out of sorts? She rubbed her arms and, overcome by frustration, let out a little scream before she headed to the front door to lock it. Who the hell would come this far to steal something? Then again, who wouldn’t? No nosy neighbours to watch the house. She gave another irritated groan, cursing Dylan for putting the seed of worry into her head.

“Why?” Kristen wanted to know.

“I might be able to stay there for the next couple of days,” Molly explained. “At least until the house goes on the market. The lovely Mrs. Fielding passed away two days ago. I’m sure it’ll take a while until people get the house on the market. Gives me enough time to find someone to fix this house.”

She took a sip of a coffee, taking in the rich flavour on her tongue and enjoying the way it warmed her up. The warmth spreading through her body was a comfort as well.

Bewilderment spread across Kristen’s face. “You can’t just stay at the stranger’s house, especially not somebody who has just died.”

Molly thought about it for a moment before she hitched one shoulder in a shrug. “Worth a try.” She took a big bite of the croissant and with a full mouth, she murmured, “I miss her.”

“Eliza Fielding?”

Molly nodded.

Kristen patted Molly’s hand. “How are you holding up?”

Another shrug. “I’m trying not to give in to the memories, but sometimes it’s really hard. I miss my little family.” She swiped her hand across her eyes and stood. “We’d better get moving before it gets too hot.”
