“I appreciate your offer,” he finally replied. “I’m not sure what to expect, though. I suppose if it’s just a strained wrist, it’ll be as easy as getting her settled back in her house.”
“Okay. I’d better let you go. Again, sorry—”
“Please, don’t apologise. It’s nice to hear your voice…” He stopped. Where the hell did that come from? “I mean…”
“You’re worried and needed a distraction. I understand. May I put Zoe on for a second or two again? She’d like to tell you something.”
Yet, before he was able to reply, he heard Lexie telling her daughter to keep it short because he was driving to see his sister and, again, the rest was muffled voices.
“I’m sorry about you sister, Ranger Jesse.” Zoe’s voice still quiet but had a little more confidence in it. “I found a name for the joey and was hoping you’d like it.”
“I’m sure I will.”
“Mum helped me finding it. Do you like Wulaba? It’s aboriginal for Kangaroo.”
Jesse’s knowledge in the aboriginal language was limited, but he remembered that kangaroo was a different word. But who was he to tell her that she might not have been a hundred percent. “I think it’s great. You’d better tell Julie tomorrow. Will you be there after school?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Thank you so much for finding a name. That’s a great help.”
“Okay. Mum says I need to let you go. Will I see you the day after tomorrow?”
He wished he had the answer to the question. “I hope so. If not, you will see me one night for dinner, though. Will you cook for me?”
Her soft giggle reminded him of his sister. “I can’t cook.”
“I can bring pizza. Do you like pizza?”
“I love pizza.”
“Deal. I’ll give you a call when I get back.”

“Hello?”
“Is this Ranger Jesse?”
The timid voice on the other end was familiar and Jesse rubbed his hand over his face. “Yes, it is,” he replied as calm as possible.
“It’s Zoe here. Mum asked me to apologise for calling so late.”
He took a deep breath, guilt rushing through him, but even more so, his curiosity was piqued.  “Hi Zoe. That’s okay. I’m sorry the way I answered the call.”
“I wanted to ask whether you’d like to come for dinner tomorrow night.”
Shit.
“Zoe, is your mum there?”
She was quiet for a beat before she responded, “Yes.”
He heard some muffled voices, but wasn’t able to decipher anything.
“Hi.”
Sure, that her hesitation was equal to her daughter’s, he had to make sure he chose the right words. “Hi,” he replied. “Look, I’m on my way to Melbourne. My sister is in hospital and I need to find out more details. Can I take a raincheck on the dinner? I wasn’t sure how to explain that to Zoe. Harrison can give you some background tomorrow.”
“Is she all right?”
“A strained wrist. It’s a long story.”
“I’m sorry we bothered you with the invitation, it was—”
“No,” he interrupted. “No, please, you didn’t bother me at all. I actually feel bad that I brushed off Zoe like this.”
“I’ll explain it to her. She’ll understand. Is there anything we can do to help?”
How much he would’ve like to tell her to be by his side, which was unusual for him, because he preferred to keep these problems on a need to know basis. Again, he was taken aback at how much she drew him in.

“What the hell,” he muttered. He should’ve taken a deep breath and think it through rationally, but he wasn’t able to. There was something she hadn’t told him. Anxious, he locked the house and headed to the car.
About five minutes later, he was on the road to Melbourne. Fortunately, the traffic was close to non-existent. He dialled Harrison’s number.
“Mate, what’s up?”
“I’m heading to Melbourne. Dana’s injured her wrist while walking on the beach. But there’s something else.”
Jesse told his friend about the conversation he’d had with his sister’s carer and Harrison was equally puzzled.
“Have you called the hospital directly?”
“I rushed out of the house too quickly and forgot to ask for the number.”
“Want me to check?”
“That’d be appreciated. And tell Julie and Chloe I won’t be in tomorrow. I will stay the night in Melbourne.”
“No worries, mate. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.”
He hung up and concentrated on the road, his mind going into overdrive about all the possible scenarios, but if something really had happened to his sister, he was convinced, Karen would’ve told him. Switching on the radio, he cranked up the music for some distraction. But it was useless. His mind wouldn’t shut up. Checking the time, he was surprised he hadn’t heard from Harrison, yet. Did he find out some more details?
When his phone finally buzzed, he swiped the green button and almost yelled, “About time.”
Silence.
“Hello?”
“Is this Ranger Jesse?”

He apologised as soon as he figured the reason for her silence. “How bad?”
“Mario is great with her. Motivating her and giving her a lot of encouragement. You shouldn’t blame him, but be grateful for his efforts.”
Exhaling a long breath, he pinched the bridge of his nose. He’d come to appreciate Karen’s subtle ways of telling him off and putting him back into line. “I’m sorry.”
“I know it’s hard for you to let go and trust him, but you should.”
“And I do, but I’d appreciate if you could tell me how Dana is.”
“She’s strained her wrist. They’re keeping her in hospital overnight, because it shook her up a little and they were worried about her blood pressure.”
“Shit. Which hospital?”
“She’s in good hands.”
“Which hospital?”
She was quiet again for a long moment.
“Karen, I’ll find out one way or another. There’s no way my sister is in hospital and I’m not coming to see her.”
“Okay. I’ll let the nurses know.”
As he rushed through the house to get his jacket and his car keys, he listened to the details of which hospital Dana was in, which floor, and room number. She even gave him the name of a nurse who looked after his sister.
“Are you there?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“This is not a fucking strain. There’s something you’re not telling me.”
“Your sister is fine,” she repeated. “I’ll see you in an hour or so.”
Then she disconnected the call.

I return to my story I started a few weeks back. This is Lexie’s POV again.

Enjoy ♥

A smile tugged on Lexie’s lips. “I’m glad you do. I think we’re going to have a really good time here.”
When her daughter didn’t reply, Lexie turned and looked at her.
“Mum?”
“Yes, honey?”
“Do you think we could invite Ranger Jesse for dinner one night?”
The last bite of Lexie’s sandwich suddenly stuck in her throat and she coughed. Jesse in her small house. How would she cope?

♦ ♦ ♦

It’d been a busy day for Jesse and it was late when he finally sat down on his porch with his dinner and a beer. All he wanted was to head to bed, but if his night was going to be anything like the previous one, he’d get little sleep again. The culprit for his sleepless night was one very sexy, shy, mother of one very cute daughter. It took him so much effort not to stare at her all morning as she fed the small kitten. He’d been grateful for the call out. At least it made sense to him now that she had refused his hand when they had initially met. He remembered an old school friend having some sort of skin condition. The poor guy was never allowed to come out for a play in case the skin would break. Jesse pondered about all that for a long while as he watched the ship on the horizon go past. Would that be the reason for Lexie’s lack of people’s skill? A simple rash?
The buzzing of the phone hauled him back from the reverie. Despite having the urge to ignore it, as soon as he saw the name of his sister’s carer, he answered immediately.
“Jesse speaking.”
“Hi, it’s Karen here. Sorry for calling so late.”
“No problems at all. What’s up? Is Dana okay?”
“She’s okay.” Karen hesitated and Jesse sensed that the opposite was most likely the case, but he waited until she continued. “She had a fall this afternoon when Mario took her to the beach.”
“Fucking hell. He should’ve known better.”
Karen was silent

Again, he surprised her with his care and forward thinking. “None for Zoe, and I’ll be fine, thank you.”
He nodded, his attention on Zoe again. “I have to head out, but I’ll see you again tomorrow. Don’t forget about the name.”
Zoe’s head bobbed up and down eagerly, but Lexie had a feeling she was too worried to speak so she wouldn’t rattle the animals again.
Although a little disappointed that Jesse had left, Lexie still enjoyed the morning and when she checked the time again, it was lunchtime already. They said their goodbyes to everyone, Zoe to each animal, and left.
“Would you like to have lunch at the bakery?”
Zoe’s eyes grew wide. “Can we? And take it to the beach?”
“That sounds like a lovely idea.”
Half an hour later, they sat at the beach, each a sandwich and a drink in their hands, enjoying the view.
“I think I like it here, Mum.”
A smile tugged on Lexie’s lips. “I’m glad you do. I think we’re going to have a really good time here.”

“Mum, Ranger Jesse asked me to come up with a name for him.”
“What a nice thing to ask you,” she replied. “Do you know whether it’s a boy or a girl?”
“Ranger Jesse checked, it’s a boy.”
Lexie sat down next to her daughter on the covered floor as Julie returned with a small bottle of milk. Jesse came back into the room as well with white gloves which he handed her.
“This should help,” he said.
With heat rushing to her face, she met his gaze and thanked him before sliding them on her hands and taking the milk. Chloe placed a kitten on her lap and within seconds Lexie had the small animal drinking. A warm sensation trickled through her as she watched the kitten, listened to her daughter talking to the girls, and occasionally glanced at Jesse who was in and out doing whatever it was Rangers did. It was a comfortable atmosphere, though, and she was pleased how much patience the two girls showed towards Zoe.
“Would you like to come again tomorrow after school?” Julie asked.
Zoe looked expectantly at Lexie. “Can I, Mum?”
“That should be fine.”
The girl screamed in delight and Chloe shushed her kindly. Zoe stilled immediately, apologising to almost every animal individually.
The heavy steps told Lexie that Jesse was back in the room.
“Ladies.”
Lexie turned, intrigued by his deep, warm voice, loving the constant smile on his lips.
“I’ll be coming here tomorrow again, Ranger Jesse,” Zoe said as quietly as she was able to in her excitement.
“This is great. I’ll make sure we have some afternoon tea for you.” He turned to Lexie. “Any food allergies you two might have?”

“By the way, thanks for these.”
Lexie choked back a chuckle. “I’d like to take credit for it, but it was all Zoe.”
“Doughnuts on a Sunday morning,” Julie said. “You lucky man.” Turning to Lexie, she added, “I’ll be right back.”
There was an awkward silence in the room as soon as Julie had left. Suddenly the four walls seemed so much closer than before.
“Thank you so much for letting her help you,” she said, breaking the quietness. “I haven’t seen her so happy in a long time.”
“My pleasure. Why don’t you come through and we’ll wait for Julie in there.”
Lexie tugged a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m a bit worried, Zoe wants you and the animals all to herself. I’m the baddie at the moment since moving her here from Perth.”
Without any hesitation, he took her hand, and gently pulled her into the other room where she found Zoe giggling and laughing with yet another staff member amongst an amount of small animals. But before she was able to move closer to her daughter, she was suddenly aware of his hand touching hers. Heat and embarrassment shot through her at the thought that he must’ve noticed the eczema on her skin.
“This is Chloe,” he introduced the other woman who was placing the joey in Zoe’s lap.
“Chloe, this is Zoe’s mother, Lexie. Julie is getting some milk so she can feed some of the kittens.” He turned to Lexie and said, “I’ll just grab you some cotton gloves to protect your skin. You don’t want to aggravate it even more.”
She wanted to respond to his comment, but was momentarily speechless by his kindness and care, and then was distracted by her daughter’s effort to feed the small joey.

I return to my story I started a few weeks back. This is Lexie’s POV again.

“Good morning, Zoe,” one of the staff members said as she came through the door. “How are you?”
“Good morning,” her daughter replied enthusiastically. “Is Ranger Jesse here?”
A smile spread on the staff member’s face. “Yes, he is. And he’s waiting for you to help him feed the joey and the kittens.”
Eyes wide, Zoe said, “Can I go through?”
“You most certainly can.”
And as if Lexie wasn’t there, Zoe rushed off leaving her mother behind. “Good morning, Julie,” she finally acknowledged the young woman.
“How are you, Lexie? Would you like to go through as well to help?”
“Oh, I think I’d be the third wheel in there. I have a feeling my girl has not only fallen in love with the animals, but also has a crush on Jesse,” she replied, hoping to sound as casual as possible, as well as appropriate as possible.
Julie chuckled. “She’s not the only one. The kindergarten groups stop by on a regular basis and I often wonder whether it’s for the benefit of the children or if the teachers need another fix of Jesse.”
Lexie tried to smile, but the damn jealousy returned. It was ridiculous. Again, she told herself that she didn’t even know him. “I can only imagine,” she finally responded. Then she looked around. The couple of old chairs in the corner next to a small table stacked with animal magazines didn’t tickle her fancy and Julie seemed to have picked up on it.
“Come on through. I’ll prepare a small bottle for you to feed the kittens. There are eight, I’m sure your daughter lets you help with at least one of them.”
“Eight?” Lexie repeated with some surprise as she followed Julie.
“Yes. I’m afraid so. We found them near the supermarket dumpster.”
“Dumpster?” Stunned by the information, Lexie’s voice went up a notch.
Julie nodded. “The mother probably is a family cat, but nobody made sure she was fixed up. There’s always the excitement about the family pet having babies, but once they’re born, the work and care is too much for most.”
“I understand, but that’s no reason to leave them next to the dumpster.”
“Sometimes we even find them inside one of them.”
The sound of Jesse’s voice startled her and she shot around. The concern on his face was just as sexy as the smile that followed when he lifted the doughnut and coffee. “By the way, thanks for these.”

Conscious of her frown, Lexie asked, “How do you know that?”
Her daughter’s look as she lifted one shoulder as if this was the most ridiculous question she’s ever heard. “He told me.”
“Of course, he did,” she muttered more to herself. Then added a bit louder, “Yes, we can get him coffee as well.”
Five minutes later, Lexie was under the shower, letting the water cascading down her body while she anticipated seeing Jesse again. She blew out a breath, annoyed at herself for giving him that kind of freedom in her head. No man had ever been allowed to do that and it bothered her. In fact, she was embarrassed. She didn’t even know him, apart from the few minutes in the bush, and the hour they’d spent at the shelter with him. What if he was married, or already in a relationship.
A pang of jealousy and sadness rushed through her as she turned off the water before stepping out of the shower. It didn’t take her long to dress and add a little makeup. The idea that Jesse could be married helped a lot.
“Mum, are you ready?”
“Yes, darling, I’m ready.”
They quickly slipped into their shoes before they closed the door behind them and walked to the bakery. Lexie not only enjoyed seeing her daughter so happy, but also the few minutes of bonding while eating their breakfast. Zoe was hardly able to sit still, though, and Lexie decided to have her coffee on the go as well. With a doughnut in one hand and the coffee in the other, her daughter marched towards the shelter and Lexie had difficulties keeping up with the girl. Five or ten minutes later, they entered through the door and rang the bell on the counter.
